On December 26, 2004,

A great earthquake occurred at 00:58:50 (UTC), at 6:58 a.m. local time, The 9.1 magnitude earthquake was located off the West coast of Northern Sumatra. The massive earthquake generated the tsunami, and giant waves moved out in all directions to effected the countries around the Indian Ocean

The disaster resulted in the loss of over 230,000 lives including over 2,500 foreign tourists, and the displacement of over 1.6 million people around the Indian Ocean, with economic losses of about $14 billion.
